Kingsley shares in Land Rover’s birthday
Kingsley Holgate is a man often seen to be larger than life, and his presence was definitely felt on Saturday night, July 13 at the Land Rover's 65 birthday celebrations.
The event was held at the East Rand Land Rover dealership in Boksburg.
Holgate is considered to be one of Africa’s most colourful modern day explorers. He is a humanitarian, author, TV personality, and fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
Holgate spoke during the evening on his fantastic adventures and experiences, including his multi-fold humanitarian efforts which forms part of the Kingsley Holgate Foundation.
His adventures have included a Cape to Cairo crossing of Africa in open boats, and a circumnavigation of Lake Turkana, the world’s largest desert lake.
He has sailed the Makgadigadi Salt Pans in land yachts and in another expedition called ‘Extreme Latitude’ he has travelled on foot, by bicycle, bullock cart, dugout canoe and Land Rover circumnavigating the globe by land following the Tropic of Capricorn.
His year long “African Rainbow” expedition to the Somali border and back in an Arab sailing dhow allowed him and his team to distribute tens of thousands of mosquito nets to pregnant mothers and to children under the age of five in a campaign called “One Net One Life”.
Using adventure to improve lives, “The Outside Edge”, a 448 day 33 country geographic and humanitarian expedition to track the outline of Africa has been hailed as the most successful expedition ever undertaken in support of malaria prevention.
Kingsley is thus known for many adventures, including the Great African Rift Valley Expedition.
The rift valley extends from Djibouti on the Horn of Africa to the base of Gorongoza Mountain in Mozambique.
Guests numbering in the hundreds were in attendance on the night, waiting to get a photo with Holgate, with the proceeds going towards the Kingsley Holgate Rhino Project.
