Lewis-Enright on top at Rooiwaal Challenge

He won the men's 50+ category in 02:26:41.

Rynfield cyclist Paul Lewis-Enright claimed the top honours in the 50+ category during the Rooiwaal Challenge in Pretoria on May 4.

The TEG PM rider clocked 02:26:41 to win the event, leaving behind Stefan Booysens who crossed the line nine seconds later. Jac Louis van Wyk completed the top three in 02:27:13.

In his autopsy of the race, he explained he had no intention of breaking away early.

“I had no intention of pulling away after 80km. When I looked back after the climb, the guys had given us a bit of a gap. I told Stefan that you don’t ever give a second away. We pressed hard. The guys chased hard and brought it back to about 30 seconds but we kept it together nicely,” he said.

Another Benonian, Bruce Viljoen won the men’s 60+ category after beating runner-up, Chris Prinsloo by 24 seconds to the title.

Viljoen cut the tape in 02:27:20 while Prinsloo crossed the line in 02:27:44. Rick Potgieter claimed the third spot in 02:53:14.
