The winners of this year’s Daveyton Street Mile are set for a bumper pay-day after the organisers decided to increase the prize money in a bid to attract elite athletes.

The event is scheduled for August 30 at Sinaba Stadium.

The 2023 edition of the event was headlined by Nedbank top runner Lucky Mohale, who finished second at the Totalsports Two Oceans ultra-marathon. But the absence of top runners last year left the organisers, Daveyton Hearts, disappointed.

“We have increased the prize money to try to attract the top runners. We are also asking for support from the people of Benoni to make this event successful,” said Daveyton Hearts deputy treasurer, Rebone Malapane.
The event includes a 10km race, 5km fun run or walk and one mile (1.6km) run.

The mile events formed part of last year’s excitement as youngsters Dineo Nzuza, Tshegofatso Batji, Mahlatse Mamonyane, Thato Sesoko and Bokamoso Nonyane showcased their talent on the 1.6km lap around Sinaba Stadium.

Thabo Masina and Gift Nkosi won the men’s and women’s 10km.
Waterfall AC’s Masina clocked 30:59 for first place in the men’s race, beating Kabelo Mwahla of Qhubeka AC 10 seconds off the pace. Kwanda Longoza completed the top three in 32:22.
Nkosi, of East Athletic Club, ran half the course barefoot to breast the tape in a PB 38:20. Her teammate, Azelia Zitha, finished second in 39:04 for second place and Xcel AC’s Pamela Gwebu, who finished second in the Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) 48km ultra-marathon in March, rounded up the podium in 42:01.

“This a marquee event. To grow it and make it one of the most attractive mile events in Gauteng, we are always looking for sponsorship. We can’t do this alone. It’s a community event and it’s going to benefit the people of Daveyton. We are appealing to businesspeople to assist us in making the event a success,” Malapane said.
