‘I realised that people were touched by my singing and, sometimes, they even cried.’ Sithole Charles, the 26-year-old
vocalist from Khutsong says this emotional response was one of the main reasons why he started taking his career seriously in 2015. His most recent achievement was his award at the Jwale Ke Nako mixed gospel competition at the Civic Centre in Carletonville on 22 April. Charles was born in Khutsong and discovered his love for singing at primary school. He says his mother motivated him because she loves to sing and taught him and his younger sister
hymns that they would sing in church. He would always receive positive feedback and compliments from his audiences. Charles is a versatile vocalist who is just as comfortable with house music, Afro-pop, gospel and hip-hop as he is as a rapper. He writes his own lyrics, mostly about everything that happens in life, what he feels and what he has been exposed to. He sees himself on big stages performing with popular artists, one day, especially since he won the best live performer award. ‘It has motivated me and inspired me to do more,’ he says. While the competition was a new experience for him, he was excited about sharing the stage with popular artists like Mpho Malindi, who was
the host of the event. ‘My mother was so proud of me. She was very happy and said I should never stop pursuing my dream. She told me that God has even more in store for me,’ he adds. Charles has a message of encouragement for
young musicians. ‘If you have a talent and people believe in you, then you should believe in yourself. Your talent will take you anywhereyou want to go,’ he says. Contact him on Facebook: Sithole Charles Gee, email msitholecharles@
