On searching the vehicle, the police found 24 batteries that had been stolen from the MTN tower, each worth R6 000 and totalling R144 000. The owner of the vehicle alleged that he had loaned it to a family member. A case of theft has been opened. Several more vehicles were reported stolen over the next few days. It is suspected that the vehicle was stolen by someone who resides at the flats as the gate was locked at the time. Another vehicle was stolen from the Amethyst Street parking area. The driver of the grey Toyota Tazz says he made sure he had locked the doors, engaged the gear lock and closed the windows because the car is not insured and does not have a tracking device. He came back from the area near the taxi rank within thirty minutes to find it was not where he had parked it. He
reported the theft to the police immediately. Four tyres were stolen from a green Ford Bantam that was parked in the underground parking at the Tereneure building in Carletonville on 6 May. The doors of the vehicle were locked and the windows tightly shut. When the victim returned the next day, he noticed that the tagged remote control had been removed and the gate could not open from the outside. The vehicle was perched on bricks. Another motor vehicle was stolen from the parking area of the Civic Centre in Foreman Street on 9 May. The good news is that the police went out to look for the white Toyota immediately after it was reported stolen. While they were travelling on the R500 road towards the R28 they vehicle that matched the description. They stopped the vehicle just as it was about to turn into R28. The vehicle was recovered and Constable Katlego Maleke and Sergeant Steven Biko executed the arrest of a 33-year-old suspect.
