Three people were left injured this morning, one seriously, after an apparent cash-in-transit heist at a shopping centre in Mamelodi.
When ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene, they found that local authorities were already in attendance.
Upon closer inspection, paramedics discovered that a male security guard lay a few metres away from his vehicle.
The man was assessed and found to be in a critical condition, having sustained a gunshot wound to his chest. Two bystanders, a man and woman, were also found on the scene. Both of these patients and each sustained a gunshot wound.
Paramedics treated the patients and provided the critically injured man with advanced life support interventions. All three patients were later transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment.
It is believed that an unknown number of gunmen had attacked the security guard.
Local authorities will be launching an investigation into this matter.
