A run of bad luck led to the arrest of a suspect who allegedly burgled Red Cap Hypermarket at the Carletonville taxi rank in the early morning of Thursday, 11 May. The two suspects apparently entered through the roof of the
hypermarket and stole an undisclosed amount of money. They later got away in a white Toyota Yaris, parked in the veld near a farm towards Doornfontein and divided the spoils between them. Unfortunately for them, two SAPS officials who were on patrol noticed them and, when they went to investigate, the vehicle sped away. A chase ensued and the Yaris ground to a halt behind a bus that had broken down on the road. The police apprehended the driver but the passenger fled on foot with a police officer in hot pursuit. A few shots were fired but the suspect managed to
get away. The police officers searched the vehicle and found the tray of a cash register and a bag of coins. They then drove off with the vehicle and the suspect. According to a witness who lives in Ext. 4, known only as Vuyiswa, he was
taking his children to the rank to catch a bus to school. He saw the police chasing the Yaris which, to the occupants’
frustration, got stuck behind the bus. He also saw the second suspect run away and a crowd of community members
surround the vehicle when the driver was arrested. They saw a pink bag of money in the boot and a balaclava
and gloves on the passenger seat. According to the communications officer, WO Peter Masooa, Carletonville
SAPS constables, Benjamin Madienyane and Princess Mokoele executed the arrest. The investigations continue and the police are asking anyone with more information to contact them on 018 787 9316/076 321 4598.
