
According to the police, no serious crimes were reported last weekend.
Although the police envisaged that this might become a problem, no housebreakings were reported either.
The police in Carletonville did, however, arrest seven people for driving under the influence of liquor.
“There were much fewer assaults last weekend, which are usually the result of people drinking,” says an official of a hospital in the area to whom the Herald spoke.
A young woman from Blyvoor was, murdered on the day before the lockdown, however. She and her boyfriend had argued because she wanted to go to her family in the Eastern Cape during the lockdown and he wanted her to stay with him.
He poured brake fluid down the woman’s throat and then strangled her.
He also drank some of the liquid himself and went to hide in a cupboard.
A friend discovered the woman’s body on the floor and called the police. When the SAPS arrived, they found her boyfriend in the cupboard and took him to Carletonville Hospital. He has been charged with her murder.
