Despite many warnings to be careful, some residents, such as a woman from Carletonville, still fall victim to social media scams.

According to the communication officer, WO Peter Masooa, a residents received a WhatsApp message from the administrator of the WhatsApp group to which she belongs.

He gave her information on how to “invest” money and said it was a way that she could make money fast. The woman deposited R1 000 into the Capitec bank account of which the number was supplied to her.

Although he promised her that she would get R4 000 after two weeks, she did not receive anything. When she tried to phone the administrator again, she found that he had blocked her number. He was also nowhere to be found.

The police are now investigating a fraud case following the problems.
