“People must please keep their pets indoors during this time,” says an inspector of the Carletonville SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), Ms Elloise Rootman. This as bitterly cold weather grips the area.
Although breeds with thick coats, like Huskies and St Bernards may prefer to stay out at night, they should be able to choose to sleep indoors if they want to. All other dogs and cats should stay inside at night until it gets a bit warmer.
Even inside, the floor could be very cold. It’s a good idea to put newspapers under the dog’s blanket for insulation if it does not have a basket. Make sure that your cat has a clean litter box in the house because, if it’s too cold, they won’t go outside and that could cause bladder infections.
In a multi-cat household, there should always be one more litter box than the number of cats in the house. They should be placed in different rooms and not near the cat food.
Felines are territorial and could feel threatened if all the litter boxes are in the same place. For more information, contact the SPCA at 018 788 6262. The kennels in Beerster Street are open from 09:00 to 14:00 on weekdays.
