Water leaks continue unabated

While hundreds of residents have been without water at times during the past week, the Merafong City Local Municipality continues to let huge amounts of drinking water go to waste.

While hundreds of residents have been without water at times during the past week, the Merafong City Local Municipality continues to let huge amounts of drinking water go to waste.
Residents living near the corner of Disa Place and Aster Street in Carletonville recently complained that water had been leaking from the sidewalk for more than a year.
“We have reported it to the municipality many times, but they are just not doing anything about it,” a resident complained.
Meanwhile, motorists driving past the corner of North Tugela and Kowie Street in Carletonville have also noticed water leaking from this sidewalk for months. Although many municipal trucks pass by, they seem to ignore the problem.
Water was also leaking from the sidewalk at the corner of Danie Theron and Van der Westhuizen Street in Fochville this week.
According to a resident, this leak has also been there for months.
The Herald asked the municipality about the problems.
Regarding the leak at Disa Place and Aster Street, the municipal spokesperson explained that “The problem is caused by a valve leak. It will be fixed as soon as the municipality receives the spares on order.”
“The municipality is awaiting the arrival of the repair parts. As soon as we receive them, the leaks will be repaired,” was the only answer on when the other leaks would be attended to.
