Merafong also a hung council

The Merafong City Local Municipality is one of the many hung councils that emerged after Monday’s Local Government Elections.

A hung council is a council in which the ruling party failed to secure 50% plus 1 of the municipality’s council seats.

This might lead to the council being run by a coalition. According to sources, this will however most probably not happen in Merafong.

According to the IEC the ANC only obtained 48.97% of the votes in Merafong.

There are a record number of hung councils after Mondays election. A total of 66 councils are hung which is more than double the number of the 2016 Local Government Elections.

The other hung councils in Gauteng are Rand West City, where the ANC got 45.33%, Mogale City, where the ANC only got 40.17% of the votes, Emfuleni, where the ANC only got 39.71% of the votes and Lesedi, where the ANC got 50.43% of the votes.
