Possible water problems tomorrow

Rand Water warns that residents of the Merafong City Local Municipality can experience water shortages tomorrow.

Rand Water has scheduled the planned maintenance work at Vereeniging Water Treatment Plant and Weltevreden to tie-in the newly installed F46 pipeline to the existing F34 pipeline and to install a new non-return valve on the pump-set 20 at Vereeniging Water Treatment Plant.
According to Rand Water’s spokesperson, Pride Mguli, City Power – the electrical entity of City of Johannesburg, has approached Rand Water with a request for an isolation and maintenance of their electrical systems which feed Rand Water’s Eikenhof pump station this week.
“Rand Water has therefore agreed with City Power to align the maintenance work and undertake all (water and electricity) maintenance tomorrow, the 3rd of June 2022 until Saturday, the 4th of June 2022 as per Rand Water’s plan. The request from City Power will result in a further 200 Millions litres per day (200 Mℓ/d) drop in pumping,” says Mguli.
As a result the impact of water interruptions, in addition to consumers in the City of Johannesburg, will be felt in Merafong Local Municipality (LM), Mogale City LM, Rustenburg LM and Randwest LM.
The duration of the maintenance work will be 24 hours. Rand Water will start pumping water immediately upon completion of this maintenance work. However, the system restoration timelines will be communicated by the affected Municipalities to their consumers. Rand Water would like to appeal to consumers to continue using water sparingly.
According to a local councillor from Carletonville who has made further enquiries, Carl Steenekamp, the work will begin tomorrow morning at 06:00.
