Metcalfe does it again

Fochville’s star ultra-marathon runner, Cornel Metcalfe, added another massive achievement to her long list last weekend.

Just two weeks after completing the Washie 100-Miler in the Eastern Cape, Cornel lined up for the Dawn2Dusk 100- miler circuit race at 16:00 on Friday, 29 July. She tackled the race with only eight other competitors, all of whom were men.
The event took place at Hoërskool Gerrit Maritz in Pretoria North. The race consisted of a one-km lap that the runners repeated 161 times.
Cornel finished second overall in 21 hours and 52 minutes. She also got the medal for being the first woman to cross the finishing line.
To put her achievement into perspective, not many ultra- marathon runners would line up to run a second Comrades race within two weeks. The Comrades is only 90 km (56 miles). Cornel, however, did two 100-milers in two weeks.
The only other South African to do what Cornel has just done is the legendary SA 100-miler Tobie Reyneke. Reyneke completed his 102nd 100-miler event at Dawn 2Dusk in 25 hours and 39 minutes. He also completed the Washie 100-miler in 25 hours and 41 minutes.
