Women changing lives

A group of dedicated women from the area are ensuring those who fall prey to gender-based violence can rebuild their lives.

A resident of Kokosi, Ms Gladys Baloyi, started the Woman of God Foundation in 2019 after having to lift herself after being in a violent relationship. The activities only started gathering momentum after the Covid-19 pandemic, however. The Jehovah Able Ministries in Kokosi availed a building to the women.
The organisation now has 10 community care workers who go door-to-door to help victims. They also work with the SAPS and the Department of Social Development, where they regularly refer women. They have undergone training at the Fochville Magistrate’s Court.
“We do not only help the survivors but also work with their families. Many survivors are not on good terms with their families as the perpetrators often alienate them from their families.
The organisation has already helped more than 130 survivors get back on their feet by engaging them in support groups, giving them food and getting them to exercise and work in the vegetable garden at the church. A social worker regularly comes to help, while the women can also read donated books at the church.
The Woman of God Foundation has held several events to make the community more aware of GBV.
The organisation operates from the church at 4153 Phehla Street in Kokosi Extension 4. Those who need more information or help in some way can contact Baloyi at 079 507 2901 or the organisation via Facebook and WhatsApp.
