Municipality ignores huge sewage leak

The sewage is leaking straight into the Wonderfonteinspruit that joins the Mooi Rivier from which Potchefstroom gets its drinking water.

Residents of Welverdiend say the municipality is ignoring a huge sewage leak near the Wonderfonteinspruit.

According to residents living around 26th Avenue, they have complained about an overflowing maintenance hole next to the sidewalk for months.
“We keep on reporting it, but no one seems to be interested,” laments a resident, Mr Russel Smith.

By Monday afternoon, huge quantities of sewage were still spewing from the utility hole, through the veld to the Wonderfonteinspruit.

“The flow is so strong, I can hear it from my house in the evenings when there is no wind,” says Smith.

On Tuesday, the Herald asked the marketing and communication manager, Mr Temba Fezani, about the matter. “The spillage is recurring and will be unblocked again, up until a permanent solution is implemented,” he respoded.
