Dangerous crossings at school

There are several road hazards around the school.

The Merafong City Local Municipality’s failure to paint basic traffic signs on the streets around one of Carletonville’s primary schools puts the lives of children and other road users at risk.

This week, Mr Dirk van der Walt, a Carletonville resident, complained about the situation.

“There are no road markings in front of Jongspan Primary School at 15 Vaal Street; neither are there any warning signs for speed bumps,” he complains.

He also pointed out that there is no stop sign at the corner of Caledon Street.

When the Herald visited the school on Monday, a faded line of less than 30 cm was the only indication of any road marking at the crossing. The stop sign at the corner of Umgeni and Vaal Streets is missing, and there are also many dangerous potholes, especially at the Caledon Street corner.

Van der Walt proved that he had officially reported the problems to the municipal call centre. Despite this, the officials had done nothing.

The Herald sent related questions to the municipality on Monday, and they promised that the potholes would be attended to.

This is the only sign that there might once have been road marking at the corner of Vaal and Caledon Street.
