Water meter theft a huge problem

Residents and the municipality have to pay for this.

Various residents are complaining that criminals are stealing the water meters in front of their businesses and houses.

The number of complaints in areas of Carletonville such as Extension 8 and 9 have been steadily increasing, while even businesses are being targeted.

A businessman in Oberholzer, Mr Dirk van der Walt, complains that he arrived at his liquor store in Van Zyl Smit Street on Thursday, July 4 and found that the water meter had been stolen during the previous night.
“The tap was also gone and the pipe was damaged. Then the perpetrator even defecated on the sidewalk.” he explained.

“I wonder how much damage the municipality have experienced due to the physical meters being stolen and the water that has been lost,” he complains.

As a result, Van der Walt is offering a reward of R1 000 for anyone who might have any information about the perpetrator.

He urges anyone with information to contact the Merafong City Local Municipality.

The Herald asked the municipality for more information about the matter on Monday.

“The municipality does not have any rewards, community members are encouraged to report such incidents at the nearest police station or contact Merafong City Local Municipality tip off anonymous fraud line on (0801111633, Sms: 49017) or the Call and Contact Centre on (018 788 9990/WhatsApp 082 516 0794),” their spokesperson said.
