Fochville women’s organization and taxi association unite against GBV
This collaboration can help many women if they find themselves in danger.
In a unique event a women’s rights organisation from Kokosi, the Woman of God Foundation, joined forces with the Greater Fochville Transport Association to raise awareness about gender-based violence (GBV).
The road that leads into Fochville from Kokosi, Kerk Street, was filled with excitement when a motorcade of minibus taxis with colourful posters drove to the Fochville taxi rank on November 29. According to the founder of the Woman of God Foundation, Gladys Baloyi, women who are part of the group met members of the Greater Fochville Transport Association when the members drove them to an event in Krugersdorp in August.
As many women in the area make use of public transport, the Woman of God Foundation and the taxi association decided that a partnership between them would be the ideal way to help women seeking help. “They said they would help us to mobilise against GBV and even printed posters with information for women on where to get help.
We want as many taxis as possible to have this information in them. We appreciate the help as we do not get funding from the government. The taxi rank is also a safe place for women as no one will rob you there,” says Baloyi.
“We are happy to be part of this and will continue to try to help where we can,” says the taxi association’s chairman, Themba Mahluza.
