Wedela SAPS kicks of 16 Days of Activism campaign
Gender-based violence continues to be a huge problem in various communities.
The police in Wedela started their annual campaign against gender-based violence (GBV) with an event at Kusasalethu Mine.
According to Wedela police’s social crime prevention coordinator Sergeant Zikhona Sifuba, they held their official event to start the 16 Days of Activism against GBV at the taxi rank at Kusasalethu mine on November 27.
“The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness that violence against women is not inevitable, but it is preventable. Pamphlets were distributed to say, ‘Don’t be a victim; break the silence! Break the cycle of violence!'” explained Sifuba.
The Wedela Police Station Commander Captain Wayne Pestana welcomed those who participated and gave them an outline of how the police would tackle gender-based violence in the area. “About 160 people were reached, saying ‘there is #NoExcuse for violence against women and children’.”
The action started at 08:30 and continued until 14:00 with representatives of the departments of health and community safety, as well as the CPF (Community Policing Forum) and police structures such as the Victim Friendly Room and Green Door Ambassadors. Members of the Westrand District Social Crime Prevention section also attended the event.
