Kokosi residents and workers demand action at incomplete municipal project

It is not sure when the work will be completed.

Residents of Kokosi complain that even though a municipal contractor has left much of the work for which he was appointed, it has still not been completed.

Concerned residents showed the Herald this week how a large heap of water meters is lying abandoned at a site in Kokosi Extension 6.

Those who worked on the project say that these metres were left after the contractor, who came from eMalahleni, formerly known as Witbank, installed less than 500 of the 2 000 meters allocated for the project at houses in the area.

They say that these meters were previously lying behind the Fochville Civic Centre. The project started in September last year, but according to former workers, contractors left the site in the first week in March. A total of 12 workers from around Kokosi were employed.

Another part of the project entailed the opening of blocked manholes around Kokosi Extension 6. Although most manholes were unblocked, sewage is still streaming from a manhole that is still blocked next to house no. 5131 in Kokosi Extension 6.

The workers also complain that they were not paid for all the work they did and at times became ill from working in the sewage without the necessary protective equipment. “We also sometimes had to borrow tools,” they complain.

The Herald took the issue to the municipality’s marketing and communications manager, Temba Fezani, but received no response.

Sewage is still streaming from this manhole next to Kokosi Extension 6.
