Khutsong municipal work site problems still not sorted out
Residents still cannot use all of what used to be their street.
Residents of Khutsong’s Xhosa Section continue to face problems more than a year after the Merafong City Local Municipality said that a project in the area would be completed.
The street next to house no. 848 have become unusable. Residents have not been able to use the street in front of their houses for at least the past two years because municipal workers have been fixing the area’s sewer infrastructure.
The street was filled with large holes for most of the time while the pipeline was replaced. This led to various problems for residents, and although the municipality originally indicated that the project would be completed in February 2024, employees of a contractor were still working at the site recently.
Luckily, the road has now been levelled to some extent. By this week, water was still damming up in places while deep cracks were forming where a section of the pipeline is situated.
The area is known for ground stability problems, and several sinkholes have collapsed there during the past decade. This caused several houses, including those of pensioners, to collapse.
Because of this, the Herald asked the municipality when, at last, this project would be completed.
“The matter will be attended in April,” the municipality responded last week.
