Carletonville residents also targeted in customs and police impersonation scam

Do not listen to their baseless threats.

The police in Carletonville are again warning that residents should be vigilant and look out for scammers.

A national television programme on Sunday night featured several victims from Bloemfontein who fell prey to scammers who contacted them and pretended to be various law enforcers.

A person pretending to be someone from customs called the victim, saying that they confiscated a parcel sent by the victim because it contained drugs.

This “official” asked for a bribe to be paid directly into their bank account so that the victim would not be arrested.

Other scammers, who pretend to be police officers and even a magistrate, then phone the victim about the same alleged offence.

As far as could be determined, a woman from the Carletonville area lost more than R200 000 to the same scam about two months ago.
