Merafong residents urged to prepare for water cuts due to Rand Water maintenance
Learn more about the planned water cuts and how to prepare.
Merafong City Local Municipality residents are being urged to prepare for extended water supply interruptions due to planned maintenance by Rand Water. The bulk water supplier will carry out critical repairs and cleaning operations that are expected to impact water supply across several regions, including Carletonville.
According to Rand Water, repairs to pipe leaks at the Zuikerbosch water treatment plant will begin at 05:00 on June 30 and continue until July 2. Simultaneously, Rand Water will clean its sedimentation dam at the Vereeniging plant from June 30 to July 21, further affecting the system’s capacity.
During this period, no water will be pumped for the first six hours, after which only 50% of the normal supply will be delivered for 42 hours. This will be followed by a gradual increase to 80% of the usual water supply, which will continue for 19 more days.
Merafong is part of the Eikenhof water supply system, which means it will experience the full impact of these scheduled maintenance activities. These interruptions come on top of existing water cuts due to ongoing payment disputes between the Merafong City Local Municipality and Rand Water.
To make matters worse, the Carletonville reservoir located opposite the 007 Shopping Complex is currently not operational, leaving no backup water supply for the area. This heightens the risk of dry taps for many residents.
🚨 What You Need to Do:
-
Store clean water in advance, especially before June 30
-
Use water sparingly during the affected period
-
Stay informed through official Merafong municipal channels and community alerts
Rand Water and municipal officials urge residents to remain patient and proactive while maintenance is carried out to improve long-term water supply reliability.
