On Mandela Day, July 18, members of the women’s and youth wings of the Mining Affected Communities United in Action (MACUA) organisation reached out to the underprivileged in Khutsong.

The women’s wing, WAMUA, and the youth wing, YAMUA, hosted a “pick a bag” outreach at the New Mandela informal housing area. The group gathered near the hostel and distributed bags filled with clothing to disadvantaged community members.

The donated clothing had been collected by members from among themselves, as well as friends and family, showing a strong spirit of solidarity and care.

In addition to the clothing drive, the group also cleaned the homes of two elderly and disabled residents and served them light meals.

“We also cleaned the houses of two elderly and disabled residents and offered them light meals,” said YAMUA member Vusi Cele.

The initiative highlighted the importance of grassroots efforts in driving change and echoed the true spirit of Mandela Day — serving with dignity and compassion.
