Carletonville CWP workers hold memorial for colleague and plan burial support fund
Workers from the Community Works Programme in Carletonville gathered at the Civic Centre to remember their colleague, Nonde Zweni, who recently passed away.
Workers who are part of the government’s Community Works Programme (CWP) in Carletonville are trying to help each other through whatever means they can.
The group recently met at the Carletonville Civic Centre for a memorial services for one of their colleagues, Nonde Zweni (52).
“She has been working as part of the programme since 2010 and always came to work, even though she had heart problems. She could not risk losing her stipend because she, like most of us, had no other income. Nonde was a hard worker and never had a hidden agenda,” says the group’s co-ordinator, Siviwe Nogaga.
Colleagues went to search for her after she did not turn up for work and discovered that she had passed away.
According to Nogoga, colleagues held the memorial service because none of them could afford to attend her funeral in the Eastern Cape.
This has been the fate with most of the other CWP workers who had passed away. Because of this, Nogoga hopes to establish some form of a burial society for the CWP workers, to which they can contribute to help each other in future.
Although some CWP workers have a negative image, this Carletonville CWP group has been praised several times in the past by their opposition party ward councillor, Dawie Harman, for their hard work. Anyone who thinks they can assist the group, can contact Nogoga on 073 974 8328.
