Merafong municipality revises budget and service delivery plans after revenue shortfall

Despite the shortfall, several infrastructure projects, including road upgrades, reservoir refurbishments and township developments, will still go ahead.

The Merafong City Local Municipality has had to revise its service delivery plans for the current year due to various financial shortcomings.

These changes were made during a special council meeting on February 25.

The council approved an adjustment budget for the current financial year. The municipality has now budgeted revenue of R2.7b, with income of more than R100m, less than originally budgeted.

Because of this, the municipality can now also spend R97m less than previously planned. The municipality’s adjusted surplus also decreased from R136m to R130m.

It is still planning to fund several projects on its own. This includes the refurbishment of the reservoir across from the 007 shopping complex, the refurbishment of the Wedela Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW), the upgrading of facilities at the Carletonville Traffic Department, the installation of smart water and electrical metres, and new electric vehicles.

Most of the planned budget is going for projects in townships.

These include solar high mast lights and street lights in Khutsong and Kokosi Ext 6, work on the roads and stormwater systems in Khutsong and Kokosi, the upgrading of the Kokosi Stadium and the Wedela Recreation Club, and work on the bulk supply line from the Khutsong Reservoir.

A project that will benefit residents of the Carletonville area is the undertaking of phase 2 of the project to fix the road to the Carletonville Cemetery.

The municipality also plans to expand the Carletonville landfill site at Rooipoort, but environmental authorisation is still needed for this from the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD).

The municipality also plans to work on, amongst other things, the Addata reservoir, the Khutsong WWTW, and the Welverdiend WWTW with money received through the Water Services Infrastructure Grant from the national government.
