Police seek suspect in Welverdiend rape case

The police’s Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit is on the hunt for a suspect linked to the rape of an 18-year-old girl in Welverdiend.

The victim was at the Carletonville taxi rank in the early hours of October 20. She needed a lift to Potchefstroom and met a taxi driver who told her he could drop her in Welverdiend, from where she could get another lift to Potch.

She hitchhiked unsuccessfully for about two hours, then went to the taxi driver’s house. According to the victim, she refused the man’s advances, but he allegedly raped her.
