Residents of Welverdiend struggle with ongoing sewage leaks and flooding

The ongoing leak on the side of Welverdiend is not being attended to.

People staying in the bottom part of Welverdiend did not have a pleasant time recently due to various sewer leaks.

Residents of 25th Avenue have been complaining about sewage flooding this street for more than a week.

“The sewage is again running like a river through our street. What a wonderful place,” one of the residents complained sarcastically. The situation, however, became even worse last week when sewage, mixed with water from the higher-than-usual rainfall, even leaked into some people’s houses.

Meanwhile, more sewage than ever before was also leaking from the overflowing manhole on the sidewalk next to 26th Avenue.

When the Herald visited the site a group of boys indicated that they were going to fish in the river close to the leak. “We are going to eat the fish but will wash it first,” they said when asked whether they knew that the fish swam in the same water that the sewerage leaked into.

Due to the seriousness of the situation, the Herald asked the Merafong City Local Municipality about the leaks.

“The sewer system was affected by the rainfall whereby the sand got deposited in the line though the storm. The jetting unit is utilised to unblock however the area is so wet the truck got stuck,” replied their marketing and communications manager, Temba Fezani. He did not explain why nothing had been done about the overflowing manhole, which has been a problem for more than a year.
