Flooding crisis in Greenspark near Fochville puts schoolchildren and residents at risk

The community say their pleas are falling on deaf ears.

A street in Greenspark at Fochville has been a headache for the community for years.

During the past week, the section of Patrys Street has been flooded to such an extent that it looks like a river.

Motorists cannot use this street as the water is too deep for them to see what is underneath.

Even worse, the street is next to Greenspark Primary School, which poses dangers for the learners, most of whom have to walk to school.

According to residents staying next to the flooded street, such as Debbie Marshall, the problems stem from the fact that the stormwater drains in this section of the street are either blocked or have totally collapsed.

It has been a problem for years

“We have been complaining to the municipality and our councillor about this for years.

Last year a young man from our community came here to open it himself. So far no one from the municipality even came to say thank you to him for doing their work,” Marshall complains.

So much water dams up in this section of the street that it also floods yards and houses.

Another issue is that residents struggle to keep their children out of the water, especially if it is as hot as it has been in the area recently.

Parents fear that they can get injured if they step on something in the water.

“I always call the children to get out of the water, but they often do not listen to me,” says Marshall.

The Herald took the issues to the municipality marketing and communications manager, Temba Fezani, on Monday, but he did not respond.
