Khutsong Ext 5 residents protest rising crime after terrifying robbery and kidnapping incident

This area fall under the jurisdiction of the police in Carletonville.

The community of Khutsong Ext 5 is up in arms after another family fell victim to rising crime in the area.

Several community members closed the road between Carletonville and Welverdiend next to the Ext 5 bridge over the weekend and demanded to address the Carletonville Police Station management.

Since the start of the year, several terrifying house robberies have been reported. Residents of the informal settlement claimed this was due to a lack of police visibility, especially in Ext 5.

On Saturday at 02:00, a mother(36) and son were in their home in the 60s when five Sesotho-speaking men wearing masks ambushed them. The armed suspects demanded money.

The robbers took an undisclosed amount of cash, a cellphone, and a blanket before grabbing the mother and forcing her to go with them.

They later called the son and demanded a ransom. The mother was eventually released early Sunday morning.

The Carletonville Police are investigating cases of house robbery, kidnapping, and extortion following the attack. The acting station commander promised higher police visibility and extra patrols from the SAPS in the West Rand’s Task Team.

The community was also informed that the police cannot track down the perpetrators without community assistance.
