Carleton Jones High School held a heartfelt memorial service this week for long-time staff member Motsamai David Motselebane (45), who passed away from cancer on May 1, 2025.

The service, held at the school on May 8, honoured Motselebane’s years of dedication and the deep impact he had on both colleagues and learners. He had worked at Carleton Jones High School since 2007, after starting his school service journey at Hoërskool Wonderfontein in 2004.

Known for his unmatched work ethic, versatile skills in welding and carpentry, and warm personality, Motselebane was described by colleagues as someone who would “go the extra mile,” always helping out without hesitation.

“David could weld and do carpentry. If you needed anything fixed, he was the one you could depend on,” shared Ingrid Rebelo, a former colleague. “He had such a great sense of humor—everyone will miss his smile.”

Beyond his duties as groundsman, Motselebane regularly assisted the school’s culture department, driving learners to events such as the arts festival in Fochville, and ensuring they returned home safely. His dedication extended beyond working hours, often at the expense of his own family time.

Colleagues described him as kind, loving, and endlessly generous—a man who never raised his voice, always gave selflessly, and became a brother to many at the school. A proud Orlando Pirates supporter, he brought joy and laughter wherever he went.

Motselebane is survived by his wife Meriam, son Thapelo Tumane, mother, and brother. His funeral will take place on May 17 in Monyakeng, Wesselsbron, in the Free State.
