Wedela police lead school safety operation
The Wedela police reaches out to the community.
In a proactive effort to ensure school safety and prevent youth-related crime, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Wedela, alongside other authorities, conducted a comprehensive school search on May 14 at a local educational facility.
Led by Sergeant Zikhona Sifuba, Social Crime Officer of the Wedela police, the operation included support from the West Rand District Police, youth desk, Community Policing Forum (CPF), and the Community Safety Office. A total of 20 officials were involved in the safety sweep, which focused on 300 learners.
Purpose: Promoting safety and preventing crime
“The purpose of the search was to check for dangerous weapons, drugs, and anything illegal that the students can carry to school,” said Sergeant Sifuba.
These unannounced checks are part of a broader crime prevention strategy that targets schools as key sites for promoting lawful behavior and community well-being.
Community-driven policing in action
This initiative reflects SAPS’s commitment to community-driven policing, aiming not only to remove potential threats but also to educate young people about the consequences of crime and substance abuse. Collaborations with local forums and youth programs are essential in fostering trust between learners, educators, and law enforcement.
No serious contraband was reported during the search, but the presence of law enforcement served as a clear message: safety and discipline remain top priorities in Merafong schools.
Building Safer School Environments Together
With ongoing efforts like these, SAPS and its community partners are reinforcing the message that schools must remain safe, drug-free zones. Future searches and educational programs are planned to further strengthen this initiative.
