Two taxi violence-linked murders rock Carletonville in one week

Police are investigating links to ongoing tensions in the local taxi industry.

Carletonville police are investigating two separate murders believed to be linked to ongoing violence within the local minibus taxi industry.

The most recent incident occurred early on Thursday night, July 3, when authorities were called to the Carletonville Taxi Rank. Upon arrival, police discovered the body of a man lying near the filling station adjacent to the rank. The victim had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. No eyewitnesses have come forward at this stage, and investigations are ongoing.

This follows another fatal shooting just days earlier. On the evening of Sunday, 29 June, well-known Carletonville United Taxi Association (CUTA) member Jeremia Bila was found dead inside his white Mercedes-Benz Sprinter minibus. His body was discovered next to the 007 Shopping Complex. He had also been shot multiple times.

These incidents have raised serious concerns about escalating violence in the local taxi sector, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
