Protesters close Carletonville–Potchefstroom road near Welverdiend Police Station due to weeklong power outage
Motorists are urged to avoid the area and use alternative routes as tensions rise over Merafong Municipality’s failure to restore electricity.
Drivers traveling between Carletonville and Potchefstroom are advised to exercise caution and seek alternative routes after protesters closed off the road near the Welverdiend police station about an hour ago.
The protest action stems from growing frustration among residents of Welverdiend and surrounding areas, who have been left without electricity for over a week. Despite repeated promises from the Merafong City Local Municipality, power has not yet been restored.
Community members took to the streets to voice their anger, demanding immediate intervention. The demonstration has disrupted traffic and motorists cannot pass past the police station.
Road users are strongly advised to avoid the area and plan their routes accordingly.
