New sinkhole discovered near Carletonville Sports Complex

Authorities warn the public to stay away due to safety concerns.

A newly discovered sinkhole near the Carletonville Sports Complex has prompted urgent warnings from local authorities, who fear it may still be expanding.

Carletonville residents are urged to steer clear of a new sinkhole that has appeared in the veld between Eureka Park and the stream next to the Carletonville Sports Complex.

Ward councillor Dawie Harman says the hole was discovered by CPI security guards during routine patrols on July 20. “They discovered the hole and told me about it. I immediately went to inspect it. It’s approximately five metres wide and long, and between 10 to 15 metres deep,” Harman explained.

The incident was immediately reported to disaster management, and the area has since been fenced off to prevent accidents. However, Harman warns that the exact depth and direction of the cave-in remain unknown, making the site particularly dangerous.

Despite inquiries from the Herald, the municipality’s marketing and communications manager, Temba Fezani, had not provided details on when the sinkhole would be addressed by the time of publication.

Authorities continue to urge the public to avoid the area for their own safety.
