Bridge over culvert near Wedela remains unrepaired two months after fatal accident

The municipality has not provided a timeline for repairs or clarity on removed warning signs.

More than two months after a Khutsong resident died after the bakkie in which he was a passenger plunged into a culvert, the bridge over it has still not been fixed.

Khutsong resident Anele Mnqayi died on July 11, after the bakkie he was travelling in with his cousin, Mpumemelo Gaba, plunged into an unmarked culvert on the recently tarred Wedela road near the town’s cemetery.

Although the Merafong City Local Municipality, which is responsible for fixing this road, partially closed the road again, they have still done nothing to repair the bridge over the culvert.

By October 2 the municipality had blocked off the culvert. They also closed the makeshift bridge over it that some residents of the area had made with corrugated iron sheets. The bridge was washed away after heavy flooding in 2022.

Although the road to the site is partially closed, family members can still get to the Wedela graveyard.

The municipality’s marketing and communication manager, Temba Fezani, failed to provide answers about when the bridge, as well as the damaged part of the road between the bridge and Wedela, would be fixed. So far, the municipality has refused to provide answers on who their contractor was who fixed the road, but had removed the warning signs that were previously in front of the bridge to warn coming motorists.
