Strong winds and high spirits mark Boskop Yacht Club’s annual open regatta

It was a weekend of fast racing, teamwork, and festive summer spirit.

The Boskop Yacht Club, based at Boskop Dam between Welverdiend and Potchefstroom, was full of life this past weekend as they hosted their annual Open Regatta.

With summer just around the corner and a constant to very strong wind blowing across the water, it was a weekend filled with excitement, challenge, and plenty of smiles.

“We had more than 40 registrations and 35 boats on the water, which made for an amazing sight! Sailors competed in a wonderful variety of classes — Dabchicks, Optimists, Lasers, Picos, Flying Dutchman, Darts, and J22s — bringing together both experienced sailors and those new to the sport,” says the club’s spokesperson, Anneke van der Walt.

The wind kept everyone on their toes from start to finish. Saturday gave steady conditions and fast sailing, while Sunday brought even stronger gusts that tested everyone’s skill and teamwork. “Still, the sailors handled it brilliantly and filled the dam with colour, energy, and the sound of sails humming in the wind.”

Off the water, there was just as much fun. Good food, laughter, and the chance to meet new friends and share new experiences made the weekend feel truly special. It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying the spirit of sailing and supporting one another.

“At the end of the weekend, we handed out prizes to celebrate those who stood out on the water— not only for great sailing, but also for perseverance and sportsmanship in tough conditions. We want to give a special thank you to all our club members who helped make this event possible — from those who managed races and safety, to everyone who helped with food, setup, and support throughout the weekend. Your hard work and dedication made all the difference,” Van der Walt adds.

“The Boskop Yacht Club Open Regatta reminded us once again why we love this place, the wind might blow us around, but it also brings us together,” she soncluded.
