Sewage leaks continue to plague Khutsong Extension 3 despite repairs
This area has been plagued by many problems.
Residents of Khutsong Extension 3 are once again battling severe sewage problems, with wastewater streaming down several streets during the past week.
On October 24, large amounts of sewage flowed from a toilet in the backyard of house No. 6764, spilling into Dlamini Street.
“It has been leaking for about a month now. I also phoned the councillor, and he phoned the municipality, but no one came to sort out the leak,” said the homeowner, Martin Radebe.
By October 27, the situation had worsened, and sewage was flowing downhill toward Mzwanzwa Street. Pedestrians and vehicles had to navigate carefully to avoid the waste and stench.
Adding to residents’ frustration, more sewage was seen streaming down Mzwanzwa Street near Hlanganani Primary School, not far from a site where a municipal contractor repaired a sinkhole and sewer pipe earlier this year.
Many locals now suspect the previous repair work was not done properly, as the new leak appeared close to the recently fixed section.
Apart from the unbearable smell and pollution, the area’s sinkhole-prone geology poses a serious risk, with new leaks potentially triggering further ground collapses.
Municipal Manager Dumisani Mabuza previously assured the community that all sewer problems in Khutsong Extension 3 would end once the manhole at the corner of Dlamini and Mzwanzwa streets was repaired. However, despite the manhole being rebuilt earlier this year, the sewage leaks have continued.
Although the Herald contacted the Merafong City Local Municipality for comment, no response was received by the time of publication.
