Mining-affected communities to gather in Johannesburg for annual MAC Summit
Mining-affected communities will gather in Johannesburg on February 10 and 11 for the 3rd Annual MAC Summit, hosted by MACUA, to discuss a just transition, mining impacts and reforms needed to protect affected communities.
The 3rd Annual Marginalised and Affected Community (MAC) Summit will take place on February 10 and 11 in Johannesburg, bringing together mining-affected communities from across the country.
As governments and corporations accelerate efforts to secure critical minerals for the green transition, organisers warn that communities living near mines are once again expected to bear the social, environmental and economic costs.
Hosted by Mining Affected Communities United in Action (MACUA), the summit will unite community representatives, women, youth, workers and civil society allies to challenge extractivist models and advocate for a people-centred approach to development.
The summit serves as a platform for communities to share their lived experiences and discuss the ongoing impacts of mining, including the failure of mining companies to meet their social and economic obligations.
It will also bring together community leaders, activists, experts and policymakers to exchange knowledge, strengthen networks and push for meaningful reforms in mining legislation.
The theme for this year’s summit is “Just Transition”, with local leaders expected to attend and actively contribute to discussions aimed at shaping a fairer and more inclusive future for mining-affected communities.
