Wedela community benefits from joint SAPS and health department outreach
Local police and health officials joined forces in Wedela to provide crime prevention education, gender-based violence support, and essential medical services to community members during a successful outreach event.
Two key government departments teamed up for a special community event in Wedela last week. On March 30, local police and health officials met with the public at the Skopas taxi rank.
The event, which began at 9:00, was led by Sergeant Zikhona Sifuba from the police and health promoter Tsietsi Matlhabe, with support from the youth desk.
The main goal of the day was to support the community through education and medical care. Key services included crime prevention, where officers taught residents about gender-based violence (GBV). They explained how to apply for a protection order and who is eligible to get one.
The Department of Health provided a mobile clinic where staff assisted residents with various health needs and even offered deworming for children. During the outreach, officials spoke with 45 community members and handed out information leaflets.
Sergeant Sifuba noted that the mobile clinic allowed residents to get help with any health concerns they had on the spot.
