Khutsong South road project frustrations persist as sidewalk issues remain unresolved

Residents say high pavements still block access to homes despite promises from contractors and municipality

Some of the issues surrounding the street tarring project in Khutsong South, which residents have been complaining about for some time, remain unresolved.

The Herald reported in February that residents were quarrelling with the contractors tarring Phokoume Street, Tswanelo Street, and Moleleki Street.

One of the main issues raised by residents, such as Nkosana Mabaso, was the fact that the new street was much lower than the sidewalks.

This height difference made it impossible for many residents to get their cars into their yards. To solve this problem, Mabaso and some other residents had to build ramps themselves to get their cars into their yards.

Although the project’s CLO and a subcontractor said they were fixing the high sidewalks, recent site visits by the Herald show this has still not been done.

On April 13, some of the sidewalks in a section where tarring had already commenced were still so high that residents at several houses would not be able to get into their yards. These sidewalks were so high that pedestrians even struggled to walk on them.

“The contractor for Khutsong Roads Phase 8B is still on site, and the municipality will ensure that all issues relating to the project will be resolved before they leave the site,” said the municipality’s Temba Fezani when asked about the issues.
