The Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) second voter registration weekend was completed successfully in the Merafong City Local Municipality.

The registration drive took place on August 1 and 2.

A total of 661 new voters registered over the course of the weekend. Of these, 394 were young people registering for the first time. A total of 3,818 people were assisted at voting stations over the two-day period.

The latest figures follow the first voter registration weekend, held on June 20 and 21, which recorded significantly higher turnout. During that weekend, 1,779 new voters were registered around Merafong, including 1,069 first-time youth voters, while 11,436 people were assisted.

Election officials confirmed that the second registration weekend proceeded without any incidents and that no issues needed to be escalated to either the municipality or the IEC.

The successful completion of both registration weekends forms part of the IEC’s ongoing efforts to ensure eligible South Africans are registered and ready to participate in the upcoming elections.
