Many teams took part in the 018 Friendship Cup soccer tournament in Khutsong last weekend and the competition is still ongoing.

The name of the tournament links to the fact that although the teams came from two different provinces, they all share the same phone area code.

According to the organiser, the well-known soccer coach Hloni Kharejane, several teams from Matlosana (the Klerksdorp area), as well as Ventersdorp, battled for places on Saturday.

Several matches were played at the Spades Grounds.

Makwero beat Mthembu 5–2, while Young Lions beat M Killers 4–3. Meanwhile, Citizens beat Maglera 2–1.

Citizens then went on to win M Kings with a score of 9–8 in the penalty shootout after both teams had only scored one goal each by the end of the regular match time. Meanwhile, T Newcastle beat Makwero with a score of 3–2, also during a penalty shootout.

Neither team scored by the end of the regular match time.

Some matches were also played at Khutsong Stadium. Newcastle beat KSA 3–1, while Merafong beat Klerksdorp Stars 5–4.

Maglera FC beat Ezinye FC 4–0.

Four teams, two from Merafong and two from Matlosana proceeded to the finals initially scheduled for Sunday.

However, due to a request from all the teams, the finals were postponed until October 20.
