Merafong FC triumphs in inaugural 018 Friendship Cup tournament
The local teams showed that they do not have to stand back for anyone.
Merafong FC beat several opponents from the North West Province in the first 018 Friendship Cup tournament.
This inaugural tournament was held to give teams from Merafong and Matlosana (the Klerksdorp area), as well as Ventersdorp and Coligny the opportunity to test their skills.
The tournament name links to the fact that although the teams come from two different provinces, they all share the same phone area code, which is 018.
According to the organiser, the well-known soccer coach Hloni Kharejane, the finals were played at the Spades Grounds in Khutsong on October 20. Merafong FC were crowned the winners after they beat Tigane Newcastle FC in the final.
Visitors from Coligny, the Young Lions FC team, finished in third place. According to Kharejane the tournament was such a huge success that a return leg will be held in Klerksdorp on December 7 and 8.
