The Fountain Private Hospital commemorated World Aids Day with a moving candle-lighting ceremony, followed by free HIV testing and counselling; encouraging the community to know their status. World Aids Day has taken place annually on 1 December since 1988. It provides an opportunity to draw attention to the HIV epidemic around the world and raises awareness about HIV/Aids. It also allows us to remember our loved ones who have passed on and show solidarity with people living with HIV/Aids. It is a day to celebrate survival and health. For many people, the day is associated with a red ribbon, an instantly recognisable symbol. Wearing a red ribbon is a simple way of showing support. Every year, there is a theme for World Aids Day. From 2011 to 2016, the ongoing, international theme has been ‘Getting to Zero’. This mission statement has been set by the World Aids Campaign, an international coalition of HIV and Aids groups and networks.
