Forgotten clinic a target for thieves

A new clinic that has been standing empty for about five years has become a big target for thieves.

During the early hours of Youth Day, security guards from TKT Security heard something in the Khutsong Extension 5 clinic they were guarding. They went to investigate and found a group of men vandalising the inside of the facility. Luckily, the guards managed to arrest two suspects and hand them over to the police. The Carletonville police confirmed that the suspects were from Khutsong.
So far, thieves have stolen electrical cables, an air-conditioner, compressor, taps and other metal fittings from the clinic.
The Ext. 5 clinic has been a white elephant since being built in 2017. Although it looks like a state-of-the-art facility and is bigger than any other clinic around Khutsong or Carletonville, it was never opened to the public.
When the Herald asked the spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Health, Ms Kwara Kekana, about the matter, she said the Department of Infrastructure Development (DID) had never handed the clinic over to them.
Although the Herald also contacted DID’s spokesperson, Ms Bongiwe Gambu, no feedback was received.
