Late goal sinks the Saints girls festival team against Ashton International College

Ashton College Girls dominated almost all quarters but needed a last-minute moment of brilliance to beat the Saints Girls Festival Team in an opening hockey encounter.

The Saint Girls Festival team fell 1–0 to Ashton International College in a match defined by relentless pressure and late drama at the Saints Sports Festival.

From the start, Ashton College Girls were dominant, controlling possession and dictating the pace of play. Wave after wave of attacks tested the Saints’ defence, but despite their control, Ashton struggled to convert their chances.

The Saints team kept things together, holding their shape and relying on quick counterattacks to create chances. Though they had a few promising runs forward, they were never in control. They were constantly pushed back by Ashton’s structured play.

As the match reached the last quarter, it seemed the Saints might escape with a hard-earned draw; however, in the dying moments, Emmerson van Zayl produced a big moment.  Striking the ball cleanly, she delivered a perfect shot that went through the defence and found the back of the net, finally breaking the deadlock.

Ashton College coach Nicholas White explained that they dropped their standards a bit.

“We were all over them for the majority of the game. We had a lot of possession, but just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net. I think that’s what a hockey game comes down to, you have to score more than the other team, and we luckily did that. “

Despite failing to convert most of their chances, White said he is still proud of the girls for working so hard. “We will work on decision making for the next game, and then, just certain things like discipline and basics, like rolling the ball to the forehand. Those simple things will hopefully get us our outcomes.”
