GALLERY: Union RFC promises improvements for next season

Union Rugby Football Club would like to thank all the friends and families who attended the event.

Union Rugby Football Club hosted its annual prize-giving at the clubhouse in Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve on November 13.

It was a great occasion as players shared the centre stage after winning trophies for different categories, although it was a bitter-sweet moment when the club honoured Wikus Muller with the Three Night Trophy.

According to the club’s chairperson, Julian Apfel, this trophy reminded them of a massive setback in their lives.

“About 32 years ago we lost three of our boys in a car accident. We remember them and we will never forget,” he said.

The president of the club, John Carr, paid tribute to all the members in his opening speech. “We might have lost last week the Kevin de Klerk Chairman Cup to Lifestyle Alberton Rugby Club, however, we thank you because you have been great. Also thank you to everyone who has helped the team in general,” noted Carr.

The chairperson shared the same sentiments. “We are a team and we strive for top honours, yet we have to single out some people as they did well throughout the season. We looked at natural talent, punctuality, and respect as all these build a rugby player. Everyone ticks all these boxes as we are building a great club.”

The winners were as follows:

• Most sociable member: Ylanda Muller.

• Sean Pete’s most improved player: Lucky Thembani.

• James Du Toit’s second team player of the year: Jeandre van Rooyen and JP du Toit.

• 200 plus first team games: Dolf Vosloo, Ivan Vosloo and Anton Coetzee.

• Chairman’s awards: Chris Van Jaarsveldt, Dirkie Vlooh, Terance Vos, Riaan Stighling and Celio Hays.

• Julian Apfel’s first-team forward of the year: Rudolf Theron and Donovan du Toit.

• Greg Frey’s first-team backline player of the year: Dylan Mostert.

• Players player of the year: Anton Coetzee.

• John Carr’s first team player of the year: Lebohang Sephiri.

• Three White Night Trophy: Wikus Muller
