Turffontein Non-Motorised Transport project completed
The infrastructure upgrade is to promote pedestrian mobility and connectivity around the school precincts.
Teachers, learners and the community of Turffontein can now enjoy high-quality public spaces after the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) completed the Turffontein Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) project.
The project is part of the transport systems to ensure access to urban opportunities and mobility with the necessary safety precautions.
The JDA undertook the Turffontein infrastructure upgrades for the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) to promote pedestrian mobility and connectivity around the school precincts. These include Turffontein Primary, The Hamlet School, Park Senior Primary and Forest High School.
The objective is to provide a holistic approach to safety and create a high-quality public environment that promotes walking, cycling and public transport.
As part of the project, the JDA provided new segmented paving for the walkways and bus stops.
The scope of works of the project included:
• Public environment upgrades
• Hard- and soft landscaping
• Kerbing and channelling
• Pavements and paving
• Traffic calming measures
• Street furniture
The upgrade project is in line with the city’s commitment to creating liveable, sustainable urban environments where residents navigate safely and efficiently using public and non-motorised transport.
One of the key objectives of the JDA is to undertake this infrastructure project using labour-intensive approaches to provide cost-effective short-term employment opportunities to unskilled and semi-skilled workers. They also appointed local emerging subcontractors for the execution of the portions of the works in the project.
To date, five SMMEs have been employed to an appointment value of more than R5m and are receiving continuous training and development through the project.
Mokgema Mongane, JDA CEO said, “Good transit corridors consist of a variety of accessible public and social facilities to connect public or non-motorised transport linkages and ensure a wide range of users could access social, recreational or educational opportunities.
“The Turffontein infrastructure upgrade project is in line with the JDA’s objective to regenerate decaying areas of Johannesburg to enhance its ability to contribute to the economic development of the city and the quality of life of its residents.”
